HARRISBURG – Rep. JoAnne Stehr (R-Northumberland/Schuylkill) issued the following statement after voting “no” to the fiscally irresponsible House Democrat 2023-24 state budget.

“I am extremely disappointed by the actions of Gov. Josh Shapiro and House Democrats. After fully backing his support for school choice to the General Assembly, the governor pledged to veto the $100 million in funding for Lifeline Scholarships to appease House Democrat leadership. The PA Award for Student Success (PASS) scholarship program would have allowed children from K-12 in the lowest performing 15% of schools in statewide standards to receive better educational opportunities. Due to the governor’s actions these students will not receive the education they deserve – and a budget has been passed that will blow through our Pennsylvania taxpayer dollars.

“This budget is a radical spending increase of 6% from last year’s budget.

“Despite this grave disappointment, I will continue to work hard to protect Pennsylvania taxpayers, cut irresponsible government spending, generate economic growth, and support our agriculture communities and small businesses.”
